Climb in the back window next week! (Spankrock is climbing too!)

April 30th, 2009
Fresh in from iO:
“Hi there friends,
I’m writing to let you know that the group show I am curating/participating in, is opening next week! I am proud to present to you, ‘Climb in the Back Window’:

“It’s not the equipment, it’s the artist.”

I pulled together an international amalgam of artists, with a street background of some kind, and asked a few of them to create site specific installations. The aim was to be raw, playful, un-pretentious, and inspiring, especially to those who lack the cash to buy art and supplies. With that in mind, we’re showing a set of photos shot on disposable cameras, three of the artists will be painting straight on the walls, and all the work has been priced for a ‘recession special’.
The show features the work of**:
Anthony Lister
Cheryl Dunn
Ricky Powell
Skullphone
Ale Zuek
Curtis Kulig
Luiza Sa (of CSS renown)
Augustine Kofie
Erik Otto
Various and Gould
..and myself.
Copies of Cheryl Dunn’s book “Some Kinda Vocation”, (with included DVD of films), as well as signed, numbered prints from Erik Otto will be on marked-down sale on opening night.
I have also hand-screened t-shirts and posters priced that are extra affordable! So all you broke punks get your tushies to the gallery (or my website in a few days).

PLUS!

My dearest homies from Good Peoples/Meanred productions have partnered with Darling Days and Emily Rabbit, to throw a sick after party for us, downstairs at Kung Fu Necktie, featuring none other than Chris Devlin (Spank Rock/Devlin & Darko) and Roofeeo (The Death Set).

Climb in the back window
Opening extravaganza - May 6th
Art opening from 7-10pm
After party from 9-2am!

Tonight in Brussels!

March 27th, 2009

RIPO opens his first solo show “…is what I meant to say” at the Mr. Ego space in Brussels, Belgium. He’ll be showing two new series of ink drawings along with new works from his Reflect On project and an assortment of photographs.

He’s also been busy painting the inside and outside walls of the gallery, and if his work on his European tour, South American tour, or recent trip to NYC tells us anything it’s that we should expect some serious calligraphy skills and lettering that harks back to the commercial sign painting of yore.

ROBOTS! LOTS OF THEM!!

March 6th, 2009

If you have eyes and have ever walked north on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg you know R. Nicholas Kuszyk’s work as it is his massive mural that intricately covers the side wall of the bagel store on the corner of North 4th St. (it also covers up a mural by our friend Anthony Lister, but that’s the fault of some crusty bagel makers not Nick’s so lets move on). So folks, hold on to your nuts & bolts because the man is having a solo show at McCaig Welles Gallery just a few blocks away, and it opens tomorrow night, 7pm.

R. NICHOLAS KUSZYK “JAMMER SLAMMER: THE EVALATION”

McCaig Welles Gallery is pleased to present Jammer Slammer: The Evalation, a solo exhibition of paintings by R. Nicholas Kuszyk. The exhibition is a continuum of Kuszyk’s robot paintings that explores the evolution of visual media, the environment, rituals, and the human condition. New paintings along with some works spanning nearly ten years, will be on view.

Hyper colorful with an overtly complex mode, R. Nicholas Kuszyk’s works combine multiple elements that relate and inform and react to each other creating a symbiosis that can range from harmonious to chaotic. While the smaller paintings work as snapshots of everyday thoughts and emotions, the larger paintings take on a much more intricate commentary.

Kuszyk’s casts the robots as personifications of the different stages of life, which are juxtaposed with the effects each stage has on the surrounding environment. Kuszyk explains, “They’re formally organized into a kind of ritualistic arrangement that illustrates the intentions of the processes’ relational, spiritual, literal, and material connectedness.” As much as Kuszyk explores the aesthetics of the futuristic landscapes of the robot world, his exhibition also focuses on “ritualscapes”.

By creating formal rituals within his paintings, Kuszyk bestows human qualities upon the non-human robots allowing the audience not only to connect with a world that appears far removed from their own, but also realize the striking similarities between us and the mechanized creatures. Like our own reality, the Jammer Slammer world must deal with social responsibility, spiritual, political, and environmental issues, all of which seem to becoming increasingly magnified in culture obsessed with high definition and over stimulation.

In August, R. Nicholas Kuszyk has a children’s book being published by Penguin Group, Inc. called R Robot Saves Lunch.

March 3rd, 2009

This just-released Anthony Lister print from Paper Monster is not your run of the mill deal as each of the 45 strong etched and aquatinted edition is hand modified by the man himself, with spray paint, stencils, and his never-far-from-reach whiteout pen. Now that’s something to get your knickers in a twist about, hey,

REMED & 2BK rock the Brooklynite show

March 3rd, 2009

Despite feeling like someone scrambled my brains for breakfast all weekend (thanks to that-thing-that’s-goin-around) I rallied on Saturday night and traveled out to the Brooklynite gallery for a much needed booster shot of art. REMED and 2BK made it well worth the trek with their luscious paintings and one very well-endowed sculpture.
